The "Log Plot" panel is on the right side of the main form is for making composite log plots and cross-plots.  

The Log Plot panel is used for making multi-column plots and allows user defined formatting. As with the QuickView plot, the curves are initially displayed using pre-defined formatting options, but these can be easily changed later.




 Right clicking on a specific track of the plot shows a drop-down menu. Some of these menu options are track dependent, while others apply to the entire plot.

  • Add track - adds a new log track to the right of the last track.
  • Insert track - inserts a new track immediately to the right of the currently selected track.
  • Delete track - deletes the currently selected track.
  • Add Log Curve - presents a selection of log curves to be added to the currently selected track.
  • Clear Log Curves - deletes all log curves from the currently selected track.
  • Change Track width - by default, a log track is 200 pixels wide. This menu offers alternatives values for the track width.
  • Change Log Plot parameters - to change the plotting scale and other parameters for all the logs displayed on the currently selected track.
  • Depth axis scale - by default, the depth scale is chosen to fit all the data in the display window. The menu option allows change the depth scale.
  • Copy Image - copies the current plot to the clipboard, so it can be pasted into another document.
  • Print - prints the current image. Printing to a PDF file is a good option, to save the log plot to a disk file.
  • Reset (delete all) - deletes all the tracks and plots reverts back to initial conditions.

 A curve can also be added to the Log Plot by right clicking on the curve name in the datalist, then selecting "Add Curve to Plot" and choosing which track to use.


On the right side of the Log Plot panel is the Cross-plot button. Clicking this will bring up a new window that allows cross-plotting curves of the currently selected data set.

The crossplot that is displayed is linked to a dataset, so if another dataset is selected, then the crossplot associated with that dataset will be displayed. Reverting back to the earlier dataset will bring the associated crossplot back into the crossplot window.




6.1 Plotting Scales

Two methods of setting the plotting scales are available

  • Depth Axis Plot Ratio. This method plots at a ratio to the screen area of the plotting window. If it is set to 1.0, the entire depth range of the data will fit in the plot window. If it is set to 2.0, the plot length will be twice the length of the plot window. If the plot window is resized, then the plot will not change, and resetting it back 1.0 will make the plot resize to fit to new size of the plotting window
  • Depth Axis Scale. This is the common method for plotting data, where plots are made at a scale of 1/200, 1/1000, etc. On the screen, they may not appear to be exactly at the selected scale, but upon printing to a paper copy, the scales should becorrect as selected.

6.2 Saving the Plot Layout

The plot layout can be saved by right-clicking on the plot and selecting "Save Layout". The same plot can later be re-made again by clicking "Load Layout". 

The file saved can be re-used later by any other dataset that is plotting the same curves.

The layout file is saved to disk with an extension ".PLT". This file is an ASCII file of JSON format and can be edited manually with Notepad. Manual editing of this file is an easy way to adapt it to different data sets, but care needs to be taken to maintain the correct format.


6.3 Saving Plots To PDF File and Printing

Right clicking on a Log Plot gives an option to save the plot to a PDF file. The PDF created is a continuous PDF with no pagination, and can be easily viewed on the computer screen with any PDF file viewer.

However, if the PDF file is longer than one A4 page, a printer will only print the first page when using default printing settings. This limitation can be overcome by selecting the "poster" option. You will also need to change the overlap to about 0.1 inch, to get a continuous paper print of the logs.

This procedure can be used when printing to a printer, or also when printing to another PDF file -  this second PDF file will be correctly paginated for later printing.
